Three more premium golf courses are located near Sunriver—Crosswater, Meadows and Woodlands. The Woodlands is regarded as one of the best courses in the state. Twenty-five additional golf courses are also located within this three county region.

Deschutes National Forest is the largest national forest in the lower 48 states, spanning more than 1.6 million acres. It encompasses several separately named wilderness areas, such as Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument, Lava Butte Geological Area, Lava Cast Forest, Diamond Peak, Mount Washington and Mount Bachelor. Visitors can drive through the national forest by way of an 89-mile paved road, or they can make use of hiking trails, campgrounds, forest service back roads and boat landings for lake access.

Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument features an active volcano, lava caves, an impressive lava flow, and two lakes. Paulina Peak, at 8,000 feet elevation has one of the best views that you can drive to in the state. On a clear day, you can see mountain peaks in California, Nevada and Washington States! The Crystal Clear Cascade Lakes are perfect for boating and fishing, and the Fall River and other smaller lakes in the area are specific to fly-fishing only. Many miles of hiking trails wind through this wildlife area, providing summer explorers or winter cross-country skiers with many unique perspectives of the landscape. Snowmobiling is another popular activity at Newberry. Great fishing and hot springs can also be found at both Paulina and East Lakes.

Many cultural activities are abundant in and around Sunriver. Sunriver’s Village Mall has many fun activities such as outdoor music, beer or wine tasting, and arts and crafts. The rec center has an ice skating rink in the winter and miniature golf in the summer. Between Sunriver and Bend, The High Desert Museum is one of the finest museums in the western U.S. The $15 adult entrance fee is good for two days since a whole day is not enough to appreciate all the exhibits. Senior rate is $12 and children under the age of five can enjoy the museum for free. The museum features indoor and outdoor exhibits, wild animals, birds of prey, Native American history, Oregon Trail history, and a restaurant and gift shop. Nearby Bend features several musical venues for great outdoor summer concerts that have hosted major groups.
